The Hearing Voices Movement

January 23rd, 2006

The Hearing Voices Network is a UK-based organization devoted to raising awareness of the experience of hearing voices and supporting those who hear them. They do not support a solely medical approach to the subject; rather, there is an increased focus on the personal significance of the voices to those who hear them. An overview of their guiding philosophy is provided in the Web article Redefining Hearing Voices:

Hearing voices in itself is not a symptom of an illness, but is apparent in 2–3% of the population. One in three becomes a psychiatric patient—but two in three can cope well and are in no need of psychiatric care and no diagnosis can be given because 2/3 are quite healthy and well functioning.

…but I have to wonder how much their views are affected by sampling bias (being more likely to hear about people having problems), because they go on to say the following:

They are messengers and they have a message. They are related to sincere problems that occurred in the person’s life and they tell us about those problems. Therefore it is not wise to kill the messenger.

In any case, they bring up a very good point—that what a person is told regarding the meaning of their experiences has a large effect on how well they deal with them:

In Sandra Escher’s research with children hearing voices she followed 82 children over a period of four years. In that period 64% of the children’s voices disappeared congruently with learning to cope with emotions and becoming less stressed. In children with whom the voices were psychiatrised and made a part of an illness and not given proper attention, voices did not vanish, but became worse; the development of those children was delayed.

This is something we often forget: the power that our essentially arbitrary culture and beliefs have over us, and our own power to change them.

Interesting, although… I always find it a little strange that in talk of hearing voices, the question of whether the voices are heard as internal or external are never asked. We ‘hear’ each other all the time (and music); they *sound* like voices, but we know they’re being produced inside our own head. We wouldn’t hear someone in-system talk to us, for instance, and mistake it for the speech of an external person. It’s closer to what happens when you have a song looping through your head, but although you hear the song, you know it is not playing on the radio or the speakers.

So, I don’t know if this would qualify as hearing voices by the classic definition or not. We’ve had a few ‘auditory hallucinations,’ mostly when sick or half-asleep, which *did* sound like someone or something that was right in the room with us.

It’s kind of ambiguous… the classic definition seems to be ‘external’ voices, but the hearing voices movement seems to extend it to internal voices too. There is actually a distinct minority of multiple-types on UK hearing voices mailing lists.

We get the auditory hallucations thing too when half asleep. It’s interesting because we’ll be talking to each other at the same time, and they’ll just be so obviously different-sounding…

…but I have to wonder how much their views are affected by sampling bias (being more likely to hear about people having problems)

The studies were in fact large scale demographic/epidemiological ones carried out in the USA. One study, in a population of 15,000 people, found that 4% of those interviewed reported that they had heard voices over a long period of time, only a third of those interviewed reported experiencing negative effects (Y. Tien, 1991). Further research revealed that many cases of hearing voices did not meet the criteria for a psychiatric diagnosis (Eaton, 1991). Further studies have backed up this

Significantly Marius Rommes’ research (founder of the hearing voices movement) of both non-patient and patient voice hearers showed that both groups hear negative and positive voices at about the same level. The difference is mainly in how the two groups react to the voices, with the non-patients not experiencing fear of the voices and experiencing far less upset or disturbance from the voices then the patients.

But most significantly regarding the issues of the voices arising as a reaction to trauma is the recently published study claiming that the experience of hearing voices is consistently associated with childhood trauma.

The author, Dr Read, who worked closely with the hearing voices movement said: “I hope we soon see a more balanced and evidence-based approach to schizophrenia and people using mental health services being asked what has happened to them and being given help instead of stigmatizing labels and mood-altering drugs.”

Commenting on the study clinical psychologist and writer Dr Oliver James commented: “The psychiatric establishment is about to experience an earthquake that will shake its intellectual foundations [and] may trigger a landslide.”

Hearing voices has always been a part of our lives. We have always heard each other. Why the driveby culture presumes to deny subjectivity, I don’t know.

I have been paranoid from age 5 or 6 from memory. I also had a rich fantasy life as a child with no one else to really play with. I always played on my own.

I had vioces from the time I think about 20 years old. I always had loud thoughts. I always thought a lot and did a lot of art and crafts as well as studying sciences.

My peers and family were largely aggressive and so was I, and I think that is why I am still on medication to this day. I have to learn to deal more with my feelings and especially with family. But I am learning.

    Hello

Have a look to a quick video I compiled to show off the dervishs dance from the Guild-Wars night-fall weekend.
The dance the Dervish does is the same one that Christoper Walken did in the video for Fatboy Slims’ - Weapon of choice music video (hence the music used)
